Teacher Librarians: What Do They Do In June?

The month of June is often a time when, in addition to continuing to partner on exciting inquiry projects with classes, our School Library staff focus on collection development and maintenance.

The practice of collection development, selection and deselection along with inventory and shelf reading is the highlight of the library year.  Teacher Librarians love shelving and making their collection perfectly organized!

To an outsider, collection maintenance can seem like a pretty easy way to cap the school year, especially considering how hectic the month of June can be. Let me assure you, this library task has direct impact on teaching and learning.

A School Library with a well maintained and developed collection allows our students to foster a love of literacy and reading.  Our TLs make sure that our collections provide students with materials and resources where they can see themselves as readers, and this makes them want to read more!

Our School Library Learning Commons staff have a responsibility to make sure our library collections are diverse.  The materials that staff and students use must reflect our school population.

Simply stated, each community member should be able to see themselves in the library collection.  Our library staff spend time making sure this happens. While we add new materials that reflect our population, we need to spend extra time making sure materials that isn’t reflective of who we are is removed.

Schools have the responsibility for our students to think globally.  We want to make sure our students are exposed to a variety of points of view, and to make sure they are encouraged to make global connections.  Our library collections must promote critical thinking and questioning. We want our students to wonder! A strong library collection should reflect an equitable and global view of the world.

During collection maintenance, school Teacher Librarians are making sure that the text and resources found on library shelves support curricula.  The library collection support the learning goals of all grades and subjects. Our collections need to be age and stage appropriate. Teacher Librarians can link you to materials for every subject!

Teacher Librarians also make sure that library books and resources used in our classrooms are high quality. We strive for collections that connect our staff and students with materials that are current, accurate and bias-free.

Finally, let’s consider this idea: libraries are innovative! Innovation in libraries takes on many forms. Teacher Librarians say we have been innovating for years. From robotics, streaming video, ebooks and more, we innovate. We also innovate when we make sure our collections are robust, diverse, reflective, global and supportive.
